Howard Leslie Shore was born on 18 October 1946 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

  • He is married to Elizabeth Cotnoir since 1990.
  • He is the uncle of composer/orchestrator Ryan Shore (Ryan was copyist and uncredited sound on eXistenZ and was credited for music preparation on Last Night).
  • At age 14 he met David Cronenberg and Lorne Michaels.
  • He was a member of the horn section in the canadian band Lighthouse from 1969 to 1972. They did the openings for The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Led Zepplin and Hendrix.
  • He wrote documentary scores in the early '70s.
  • He was the musical director of the first Saturday Night Live band, from 1975 to 1980.
  • He wrote the main title theme to Late Night with Conan O'Brien.
  • His score to Ransom (1996) was rejected and replaced with a score by James "I won an Oscar for Titanic" Horner and Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan.

    Chris Walas (pronounced "Way-less") is a Hollywood special effects technician, movie modeler, and director. He was born on 1955 in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

    Chris did the special makeup on Scanners and with the crew of his special effects compnay, CWI (Chris Walas Inc.), he did the creature effects for The Fly and Naked Lunch.

    You may also know him as the director of The Fly II (1989), the (unsurprisingly) disappointing sequel to The Fly.

    Chris also worked on the creature effects for such movies as Piranha (1978), Return of the Jedi (1983), Gremlins (1984), Enemy Mine (1985), Gremlins 2 (1990), Arachnophobia (1990). He also worked in George Lucas' special effects company ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) on special makeup effects for Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), and did the stunts outfit for RoboCop 2 (Peter Weller stars in both this and Naked Lunch, but the two didn't actually meet on the set).

    Chris closed CWI to dedicate his time to his directing career. He donated many movie props to the charity raffle, which was to benefit the Pediatric Aids Foundation and Crusade for Children.

    Jim worked on the creature effects of The Fly as part of the CWI (Chris Walas, Inc.) crew. He later was the project supervisor on Naked Lunch and the visual and special effects supervisor on eXistenZ.

    You may better know him as the director/producer of Jason X (2001) (in which Cronenberg has a cameo as Dr. Wimmer).

    Jim cites David Cronenberg as his mentor and idol. This is what he has to say about him: "David [Cronenberg] knew I wanted to direct and it was my goal. He let me into his world and I could ask him any questions I wanted on what he was doing. I'd ask, 'Why did you block it like that,' or 'What were you thinking here?' He really allowed me to pick his brain."
